My New Favorite Travel Jeans: Bootcut by 7 For All Mankind
If you’re like me, taking cross-country flights can be such a miserable, cramped
experience that you’re a little obsessive when it comes to planning the details of your trip. Personally, I need to
have a window or an aisle seat, I need to have just the right flying music loaded into my iPod, and I need to have
two or three different light reading books to accommodate whatever mental state the trials and rigors of flying
have put me in that day. I’m only slightly above average in height, but my long legs get so cramped that I’ll
practically kill for an exit row seat. I can only imagine how guys over six feet must suffer.
Whenever I have a trip coming up, one of the things I devote very specific attention
to is my travel clothing. I like to dress casual and comfortable, but looking like a slob feels almost as bad as
being uncomfortable, so I try to strike a balance. My ideal outfit includes light shoes, a t-shirt, and preferably
jeans that aren’t too heavy or stiff. I’m so adamant about having comfortable jeans when flying that, recently,
when I was looking ahead to a long flight from JFK to London, I actually hit up the 7 for All Mankind outlet store
in Soho specifically to see if I could find the perfect jeans for flying.
Luckily, I found the Bootcut in San Clemente jeans on the rack, and they looked nice,
although not extraordinary. At first, I didn’t think I’d want them, but I figured I might as well try them on, just
in case. And then, when I slipped them on, I knew immediately that it was a love connection. These jeans are 100%
cotton, amazingly breathable, and soft as a kitten’s belly fur. Honestly, they’re so light and soft that, when I
wear them, I have to keep looking down to make sure I didn’t forget to wear pants.
Travelling aside, 7’s Bootcut in San Clemente is one of those types of jeans that
work best for casual weekend afternoons when you want to look good but feel comfortable and laid-back. With the
factory made worn-in look, they’re not great for formal events, or even semi-formal events, but they’re perfect for
barbecues, picnics, going out for brunch, or even light hiking in the fall or spring.
Some people find the streaky, slightly ripped look a little forced and maybe
over-the-top. But, speaking for myself, I find jeans that come with the worn-in look to be especially loose and
comfortable. Even moderately tighter fitting jeans like these bootcuts feel light and free around the waist and
thighs, and this is at least partially because the seams are a little stretched out from the factory stretching
process. They don’t hang heavy like some standard cut jeans, and they restrict your movement like certain types of
skinny jeans.
At around $215 direct from the company’s website, the price is a little steep. But
for me, it’s worth the money to have a little extra comfort and peace of mind on those long flights and lazy fall
weekends.
